Island Habitats
The Isle of Wight boasts an array of diverse terrestrial and marine habitats, making it a haven for a wildlife. The Island's coastline includes sandy beaches, chalk cliffs, rocky reefs, salt marshes and seagrass beds. Its land surface comprises northern ancient woodlands and clay meadows, the dominating spine of chalk downland, and the southern sandstone hills and plains, all cut through by rivers and streams, floodplains and estuaries.
Detailed information on priority Island habitats is given in the collection of Habitat Action Plans (HAPs) produced by the Biodiversity Action Partnership.
